1. What are the admission requirements for Poi Lam High School? (New Students /Transfer Students)

For new students, admission requirements can be met by either meeting the academic standards of their previous school or successfully passing our school’s entrance exam.To be considered for admission, transfer students must undergo an additional interview, pass an exam, or meet our school’s academic standards.

2. What courses does Poi Lam High School offer?

Our school offers two main programs: the IGCSE program and the UEC program.

Additionally, we provide additional qualifications such as the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia(SPM) and the Cambridge International Advanced Level (A-Level).

3. What is IGCSE?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), established by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), a subsidiary of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, is a comprehensive secondary school curriculum that uses English as the medium of instruction. Widely adopted by international schools in Malaysia, the IGCSE is recognized by top universities worldwide.

4. What is UEC?

The Cambridge courses (IGCSE) are a five-year program with an optional 1.5-year extension to A-level, primarily taught in English. The UEC courses adopt a six-year structure (three years of junior course and three years of senior course) and utilize Chinese as the main language of instruction.

5. What is the difference between IGCSE and UEC courses?

The Cambridge IGCSE program is a five-year curriculum with an optional 1.5-year extension to A-Level, primarily taught in English. In contrast, the UEC program follows a six-year structure (three years at the junior level and three years at the senior level) and uses Chinese as the main language of instruction.

10. Do students have opportunities to participate in international exchanges or competitions?

 Yes. The school organizes various competitions every year. When events are available, the Extracurricular Activities Department or subject teachers will inform students. 11. Does Poi Lam High School have student dormitories?

Yes, our school offers well-equipped dormitories with four-bed and six-bed rooms. Each room is air-conditioned and comes with a private bathroom.

1. What courses does POI LAM High School provide for international students?

2.How many people can stay in a room?

The new hostel offers rooms for four or six residents.

3. What are the requirements for applying to the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) program?

 An intermediate level of English proficiency is required.

4. What is the age range for students to apply?

POI LAM High School offers secondary education and admits students aged 13 to 18.

5.Does POI LAM High School help international students with visa matters?

Yes.

6. What support or services does the POI LAM High School International Department provide?

Before admission: Processing of visa.

After admission: Support for students’ learning and daily life, and assistance with integration into school life.

7. Are there any age requirements for international transfer students?

The age for visa processing should not exceed 18 years old. If a student needs to retake a year, the school will consider this on a case-by-case basis. (If a student exceeds the typical age limit due to grade retention—for example, senior high school students are typically, 18 years old—our school will assist in applying to KPM. However, approval from KPM is not guaranteed.)

8. Does the school provide tuition services for international transfer students?

The school offers after-school tuition services, and students can also seek external tutoring if they need it.

9. Do international hostel students live with local students?

Yes.

10.Can parents accompany their children?

Yes, and we also assist with the application for a dependent visa.

11. Do international transfer students need to take an entrance exam or meet other requirements?

International transfer students must provide academic transcripts and attend an interview. If they do not pass the interview, the school may require them to take an entrance exam for further review.

14. What are the educational pathways for international students?

Both the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the IGCSE are widely accepted by universities around the world as valid secondary school certificates.
[If a Chinese student holds an MM2H visa (Malaysia My Second Home—a visa program provided by the Malaysian government for eligible foreigners) or qualifies as an overseas Chinese-born (having lived abroad for more than three years), they are eligible to participate in the Chinese Overseas Chinese Students’ Entrance Examination.]

1. What amenities are provided in the hostel rooms?

Each floor is equipped with shared toilets, washing machines, drying racks, drinking water dispensers and water heaters.

4. How do you apply for a room?

You can contact the Academic Department of POI LAM High School to apply for accommodation.

5. Are off-campus students required to stay in the hostel?

If students do not live with their guardian or parents, they must stay in the hostel.

6. Are international students required to stay in the hostel?

International students must stay in the school hostel unless they live with their parents or legal guardian.

7. Can students from Ipoh apply for accommodation?

Yes,they can.

8. Are the rooms for male and female students seperate?

Yes, the male and female have seperate room.

9. Do students need to prepare own bedding?

Yes, students must purchase their own personal items, such as pillows, bed sheets, and blankets.

10. Are hostel students allowed to use mobile phones?

From Monday to Friday, students must hand over their mobiles phones to the warden for safekeeping and may apply to use them when needed.

11. When can hostel students go home?

Students can go home on weekends and during school holidays. However, they must complete the necessary procedures at the hostel reception counter before leaving.

12. Does the hostel close on the weekend or holidays?

Students can stay in the hostel on weekends and public holidays, but it will be closed during long school holidays.

13. Are students allowed to cook or eat in the hostel?

Students are not allowed to bring takeout into their rooms and must eat in the hostel canteen. However, snacks such as biscuits and Milo are allowed.

14. Is there a teacher to supervise the hostel students at night?

Hostel wareden reside on each floor to take care of the students.

15. Does the hostel provide meals?

Yes, our school provide three meals a day for hostel students.

16. What should a hostel students do if they feel unwell or sick?

The hostel warden will notify the parents, and staff members will accompany the students to a clinic or hospital to ensure their safety.

17. Does the hostel have curfew hours?

Yes. Hostels students must return to the hostel by 9:00 PM if they are inside the school. Those returning from outside must be back by 6:00 PM.

18. Does the hostel have a fixed daily schedule?

Yes. Form Monday to Thursday, self study time is from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On Friday evenings, students clean their hostel. Lights are switeched off at 10:30 PM for bedtime.

19. Are hostel students allowed to bring electrical appliances (such as hairdryers or electric kettles)?

For safety reasons, each room is allowed only one hairdryers. Other electrical appliances are not permitted.

20. What should hostel studets do if they faill ill or face an emergency in the middle of the night?

The hostel warden will immediately contact the parents and take tghe students to a clinic or hospital for medical attention.

22. Are hostel students allowed to go out?

Only high school students (aged 16 or above) can apply for permission to go out. They must have parental consent and follow the related guardian.
